Can you fly a drone at Helwig Field in Greenwell State Park?

CLUB FIELD

Helwig Field, Patuxent Aeromodelers (Hollywood)

A radio-control club field inside Greenwell State Park on Steer Horn Neck Road in Hollywood, run by the Patuxent Aeromodelers (Pax Aero), an AMA club whose site says the field is FAA FRIA approved. The club’s rules (August 2025) allow multirotors under 10 pounds in the helicopter and multirotor area, one at the pad at a time, yielding to planes for takeoffs and landings. Only club members with an AMA card and FAA registration fly on their own; guests fly under a hosting member’s sponsorship, up to five visits a year, and the gate stays locked when no members are there, so contact the club first. FPV pilots need a spotter. Flying is sunrise to sunset while the park is open, and state park rules apply (no alcohol). The field is about 9 miles from NAS Patuxent River, so check B4UFLY and the Pax River page before you fly.
