Can you fly a drone at Walt Good Field in Boyds?
Walt Good Field, DC Radio Control Club (Boyds)
The DC Radio Control Club’s field at the Montgomery County Model Airpark, 16200 Schaeffer Road in Boyds, is an FAA-recognized flying site (FRIA). Drones fly on the rotary-wing side with the club’s helicopters, and modern DJI 5.8 GHz and 2.4/900 MHz controllers are fine. Pilots need AMA membership, the FAA registration number visible on every aircraft, and proof of TRUST completion, and must fly as a member or a member’s guest supervised by a rated club pilot. Guest flying is meant for one-off visitors and prospective members, not regular use. Only recreational flying is allowed; no commercial work. The gate is locked unless a member is flying, and the club has no way to book a visit ahead, but members are usually there on good-weather weekend afternoons. Hours are 8:30am to sunset Monday to Saturday and 9am to sunset Sundays and holidays. The field is inside the D.C. Special Flight Rules Area, so check B4UFLY before you fly. From Clopper Road (MD 117), turn onto Schaeffer Road and follow it about 3.5 miles; the entrance is on the left just after the one-lane bridge. Field details: asphalt runway about 600 by 40 feet with no obstacles off either end. Field details from Maryland Model Aviation, used with permission.
